About Us
Welcome to the primordial lands of the organic farm NZ27,
Vision & Mission
Since October 15, 2023, David Egelmeers has been the General Director of BV Exploitatie NZ27. “We are strongly focused on innovation, sustainability, climate resilience, and even higher quality,” says David. The farm became Demeter certified in September 2025. This perfectly aligns with the mission of the NZ27 Foundation to ensure that the fields remain organic forever. The foundation owns 100% of the private limited company (BV), making the ownership steward-owned. This ensures that the legal relationships and ownership structure are highly future-proof and extremely reliable.
Crops
On the former Zuiderzee lands, we have been demonstrating the strength and potential of large-scale organic farming for several decades. On 210 hectares, we cultivate potatoes, onions, pumpkins, peas, beans, cabbage, grass-clover-lupine, sweet corn, beets, and grains using biodynamic methods. Additionally, we specialize in preservation, storage, and sorting.
People, Animals, and Nature
At NZ27, we have seven staff members working around five FTEs, with room for interns. Each permanent employee has their own specialty, ranging from sowing to harvesting and from machine maintenance to storage and preservation. During the busy season, eight people live on the farm. These individuals are seconded by a Dutch agency and work alternately at NZ27 or with nearby companies in Zeewolde.
We have seven beehives, which happily pollinate our crops and are free to swarm when they wish. We do not harvest honey, and the bees are allowed to swarm naturally. In addition to these diligent workers, our fields are home to many different bird species. Herons, geese, raptors, skylarks, and even the rare blue harrier have occasionally been spotted by the bird watchers who visit us regularly.
All this fauna cannot exist without the right flora. To preserve useful insects, we plant nature strips and regularly conduct trials to create the right balance between harmful and beneficial insects. A good example is planting strips of Lobularia (snowcloth) between the white cabbage. We have released predatory bugs (Orius Laevigatus), which have a clear preference for thrips and feed effectively on Lobularia pollen. This natural method is already widely used in leek cultivation.
“It’s wonderful that we are Demeter certified. For me, this is a motivation to focus even more on strengthening the life force in people, crops, and animals.” Jan Harm, Farm Manager at NZ27.
Machines
Machines and the associated technology are indispensable on our farm. We rely on professionals from the industry, and two of our permanent staff are responsible for daily maintenance and small repairs. For biodynamic preparations, we use a drone, which works effectively and precisely. Technology and mechanics are not the leading force, but the right choice contributes to the quality of our work and the production of high-quality products.
